Students from BASIS Independent Bellevue took first place in the Department of Energy's 34th National Science Bowl middle school competition April 29 in Washington, D.C. The team from Bellevue, Washington, earned a spot in the national competition after winning BPA’s Regional Science Bowl in February.

Proving their mettle in a field of 48 middle school regional champions, BASIS Independent advanced to the National Science Bowl finals where they defeated Hopkins Junior High School of Fremont, California. Both teams were awarded $5,000 for their placements.

"If these incredible students are any indication, our clean energy future is in great hands," Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said.

The Science Bowl is an intense academic event testing students’ knowledge of science and mathematics. Read more in DOE's announcement here
